Christmas in July, Cliché?

We’ve all heard it. We’ve all rolled our eyes at it. In fact, we’ve probably all wondered why retailers haven’t moved “Christmas in July” sales to “Christmas in May”, given their propensity to do their best to extend the holiday shopping season for a long as possible! It only makes sense, doesn’t it? With Christmas decorations hitting the stores in mid October, why not move Christmas in July sales to May?

OK, all kidding aside, Christmas in July is cliché, right? I know that’s what I thought, so I decided to do a little investigating and here’s what I’ve discovered. Most retailers are offered advantageous terms on Christmas related merchandise if they are willing to make a few concessions. Typically, to take advantage of these terms retailers have to start receiving Christmas goods in late May and early June. The good news for retailers is that by doing this they typically don’t have to pay for goods until December, however, the bad news is, the early receipt of this Christmas merchandise takes up a lot of valuable warehouse space. Therefore, by blowing out some of the Christmas merchandise in July, the retailer creates a little breathing room back in the warehouse.

So, the next time you see a Christmas in July sale, remember, in addition to generating some cash flow in the typically slow month of July, the retail merchant may also be attempting to free up some much needed space in the warehouse. Therefore, when they offer us great deals on getting some of our Christmas shopping done early instead of being completely skeptical we should appreciate the discount and maybe, just maybe (if the deal is good enough), save a little cash by doing some early Christmas shopping! However, assuming we do, then our issue, similar to the retailers receiving Christmas merchandise early is, where am I going to put the stuff until Christmas?!?!

Fiesta Lemongrass has arrived!

For those of you unfamiliar with Fiesta dinnerware, it's a solid color, mid-range dinnerware that is incredibly durable and its made in right here in America! Summer is here!

Summer is upon us and that means it time to fire up the barbecue grill. Some of my favorite things to cook on the grill are also the easiest; hamburgers, chicken and steak, and while my name may be Dr. Dinnerware, I do like to grill out too!

Hamburgers, chicken and steak are all great straight off the grill with a little salt and pepper added prior to grilling, but there are also so easy things to do to help "jazz" them up and make everyone think you spent the day preparing for the cookout!

Hamburger:

Hamburger is probably the most versatile grill-n meat there is, and jazzing it up is so easy! Rachel Ray has a great recipe for a blue cheese stuffed burger that does not take up a bunch of time to prepare. Trust me when I tell you these babies are delicious! Chicken:

I never get too fancy with chicken. I simply go to the grocery store and buy a citrus based marinade (usually in the same isle as salad dressing) and after salting, peppering and poking (just take a fork and go to town) the chicken I put it in an appropriately sized piece of Tupperware with a lid, add the marinade, shake and refrigerated for 24 hours. Cooked properly the chicken is guaranteed to be juicy and tasty!

Steak:

For me, with steak it's more of a balancing act. If I'm grilling a top shelf piece of meat I don't do much to it. Just a little salt and pepper and grill it to medium rare and I'm in hog (or I guess cow) heaven! With a more value priced slab of meat I may try a little marinade along with the salt and pepper, but I really don't do much. However, I do try and create more flavors by adding grilled mushrooms or onions to accompany the steak. The cool part about steak is whether it's top shelf or value priced...who is going to complain about being served steak?!?!

OK, I could not call myself "Dr. Dinnerware" if I did not include a few shameless plugs for dinnerware and related items.

Well, believe it or not we are heading into the Spook-tacular season of Halloween! I realize that the season is about costumes, candy, cake doughnuts and cider…but you know me, Dr. Dinnerware and I’m thinking about the coordinating dinnerware for this scary holiday!

While most of you are pondering the awesome Halloween parties you will be throwing or attending I’m thinking about the food that will be served and what it will be served on! In fact I came across the coolest recipe brownies a few years ago on Betty Crocker’s website. My kids and I had a blast making them and we actually won the cookie contest at a neighborhood party we attended! And aside from being fun to make and obviously well received by our friends, they were delicious…mmmmh!

Now to my favorite part…what to server your Halloween treats on! The above brownies are being served on a Waechtersbach (pronounced “Vecter-spock”) Kiwi plate. It’s a beautiful German dinnerware line that comes in a dizzying array of colors that can brighten any day.
